OUTREACH TO JABULANI COMMUNITY CENTRE July 2014

Sertanya Reddy (right in above photo) once more used her USA PhD vacation time to make a difference  in her home town Durban, South Africa.  Sertanya, an ex ARROWSA management and CCMS, UKZN student rallied all her friends, family and colleagues to once more collect donations of clothing, food and toys for the Jabulani community centre.  Sertanya raised R1800 that was spent on basic food stuffs such as mielie meal, rice, zamp, tea, sugar, cooking oil, tinned fish, beans, split peas and barley as well as cleaning products.

ARROWSA Bechet coordinator, Bheki Dlamini is also leader of Bechet Interact and he and the Interact team heeded Sertanya's call for donations with bags of clothing, toys and tinned food. The ARROWSA management and family (especially Carla Elliot) too responded well with clothing, food and cash donations.

We were once more given a warm welcome by Jabulani staff, especially Gloria Shange and Sister Marco, and the community children and all the clothes were handed out to the children while we were there.

The food will be used in the Jabulani kitchen where large meals are cooked everyday in massive black iron pots heated by wood fires.

The Jabulani centre has expanded their sewing facilities and we were impressed by the high quality of bags and children's tracksuits that the community women are making at the centre.  To sustain this part of their community work they need donations of pieces or scraps of material.

The carpentry workshop too appears to have expanded with the production of neat cupboards from donated wood.

The large vegetable gardens now include terraces with retaining walls and although it is now winter there is still evidence of care and planting in preparation for the spring crops.

ARROWSA would like to thank Sertanya for including us and ARROWSA will continue to support Jabulani as it provides a much needed service to its community.

If you would like to make a donation to Jabulani contact ARROWSA or see their contact details in the letter below.
